Mae P. Skalla, 84, of Beattie, Kansas, passed away Saturday, January 22, 2011 at the Life Care Center in Seneca, Kansas. A funeral service was held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, January 27, at Kinsley Mortuary. The Rev. Dale Lewis officiated. Music included "Amazing Grace", "The Old Rugged Cross", "Beyond The Sunset For Me" and "Angels Among Us". The pallbearers were Jay Skalla, Jeff Skalla, Brian Skalla, Chris Skalla, Lee Skalla, Lyle Skalla and Matthew Martin. The honorary pallbearers were Jeff Wells, Mike Daniels and Daniel Powell. Burial was in the Beattie Union Cemetery. Mae was born on November 12, 1926 at Cleburne, Kansas, the daughter of Victor and Mary Novak Johnson. She graduated from Blue Rapids High School in 1945. After graduation she married Gail Skalla in May of 1945. Mae was a homemaker and farm wife and she enjoyed playing bingo and going bowling. She was a member of the Women of the Moose and also the Jayhawker Club. Survivors include her son, Gary Skalla (Sharon), Beattie; daughter, Nancy K. Martin (Jim), Sterling, Colo.; sister, LaVonna Spunaugle (Dick), Blue Rapids; twelve grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Mae was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gail Skalla, on February 5, 1990; son, Paul Skalla, on September 26, 2009; and brother, Alvis Johnson.
