Velma Severns, 78, of Marysville, died Thursday, February 3, 2011 at Cambridge Place in Marysville, after a three month courageous battle with leukemia. A funeral service was held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, February 7 at the First Christian Church in Marysville. The Rev. Jerry Zanker officiated. Deb Landoll played the organ while Wayne Kruse sang “On Eagles Wings”, "Amazing Grace” and “Because He Lives”. The pallbearers were her sons and grandsons, David Seidl, Wesley Seidl, Albert Hoelting, Brian Seidl, Kevin Seidl and Edward Seidl. Burial was in the Marysville City Cemetery. Velma was born October 6, 1932 north of Marysville, Kansas, near Marietta, the daughter of Edward J. and Mildred (Zarybnicky) Sedlacek. She attended Blue Valley grade school near Marysville and graduated from Marysville High School in 1950. On November 15, 1959, her parent's 36th wedding anniversary, she was united in marriage to Norman Severns at the First Christian Church in Marysville. After the wedding, a reception was held at Velma's parents home on the farm near Marietta. This farm became a 100 year, fourth generation family farm which Velma later became an owner and remained so until her death. When Velma and Norman were married she worked for a short time at Marysville Mutual and later then worked at Ackerman Jewelry. Her parents, and one sister, Darlene Stitt, preceded her in death. Survivors include her husband, Norman; three children, David (Joanne) Seidl, Enid, Okla., Wesley (Janet) Seidl, Garber, Okla., and Ann (Albert) Hoelting, Shawnee, Kan.; one sister, Carol (Paul) Klover, Manhattan, Kan.; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A memorial fund has been established and may be made to Meadowlark Hospice, Community Memorial Healthcare or the First Christian Church in Marysville.
