Clarence Havel

Clarence Havel, 94, of Washington, Kansas, died Friday, February 18, 2011 at the Washington County Hospital. A funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, February 21 at Zion Lutheran Church in Hanover. The Rev. Jill Menard officiated. Mae Nieman played the organ while the congregation sang “In the Garden” and “Old Rugged Cross”. The pallbearers were Ron Nutsch, Rick Blush, Alvin Kasper, Bill Holbrook, Richard Allerheiligen and Ryan Allerheiligen. Burial was in the Hanover City Cemetery. Clarence was born January 28, 1917 near Cuba, Kansas, the son of Anton A. and Daisy (Baxa) Havel. When Clarence was three years old his mother passed away. He attended Thomas School, Silverthorne Grade School and graduated from Cuba High School in 1934. All through school he helped his father farm. On April 2, 1960 he married Rosetta L. Cohrsen at Hanover. They resided in Topeka until 2007 when they moved to Linn, Kansas. Clarence farmed in Iowa for two years and farmed southeast of Cuba. He later worked at an ammunition plant in Wichita, Kansas, before working at Goodyear in Topeka from 1945 until retiring in 1981. During this time he also farmed several years east of Barnes, Kansas. He was a lifetime member of the Loyal Order of Moose at Topeka, Kansas. Survivors include his half sister, LaVonne Thomas, Belleville, Kan.; nieces and nephews, Janice Carrico, Trudy Ringer, Alvin Kasper, Susan Montague, Marcella Holbrook Stewart and Melvin Allerheiligen. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Rosetta, on May 31, 2009; stepsister, Vila Drapel; half sister, Venis Dean Kasper; and niece, Esther Kasper. A memorial fund has been established and will be designated at a later date. Contributions may be sent in care of the Hanover Mortuary.
