Joan E. Hynek, 78, of Hanover, Kansas, passed away Monday, February 21, 2011 at Cambridge Place in Marysville, Kansas, after a long battle with breast cancer. A rosary service was held at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, at St. John's Catholic Church in Hanover. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, Feburary 24 at the church. Father David Metz officiated. The pallbearers were Jacob Hynek, Travis Hynek, J.R. Hynek, Tyler Hynek, Branden Hynek, Connor Hynek, John Nichols and Brett Hynek. Burial was in St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Hanover. Joan was born on September 11, 1932, at home on the farm north of Hanover, the daughter of George C. and Clara (Koppes) Meier. On February 4, 1953 she married John A. Hynek at St. John's Catholic Church in Hanover. They moved to a farm six miles south of Hanover after John was honorably discharged from Camp Atterbury, Indiana in June of 1953. They lived there until retiring in August of 1998 and then they moved to their home in Hanover. Joan was a life-long member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and Altar Society. She was also an active volunteer in the community of Hanover, member of the Hanover American Legion Post 306 Auxiliary Unit and worked at the Hanover Mortuary. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Frances Schwartz; brothers, Leonard, Clarence, Alvin and Victor Meier; sister-in-law, Eileen Meier; and a brother-in-law, Clarence Schwartz. Survivors include her husband of 58 years, John A. Hynek, Hanover; daughter, Janine (Dale) Allerheiligen, Houston, Tex.; sons, John Robert Hynek, Belvue, Kan., Jeri (Sandy) Hynek, Manhattan, Kan., Jay (Cindy) Hynek, Jeff (Vonda) Hynek, and Joel (Karen) Hynek, all of Hanover, Jed (Amy) Hynek, Manhattan, Kan., and Jene (Lori) Hynek, Lenexa, Kan.; brothers, Harold Meier, Loveland, Colo., and Gilbert (Ann) Meier, Lincoln, Neb.; sisters-in-law, Eleanora Meier, Hanover, Lucille Meier, Geneva, Neb., Pearl Meier, Ames Iowa, and Martha Meier, Marysville, eighteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A memorial fund has been established in her name to be designated later. Contributions may be sent in care of the Hanover Mortuary.
