Elsie M. Wempe, 89, of Marysville, Kansas passed away Wednesday, June 8, 2011 at Cambridge Place in Marysville. Visitation was Sunday from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Kinsley Mortuary in Marysville. A rosary service was held at 7:00 p.m., Sunday, at St. Gregory's Catholic Church in Marysville. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, June 13, at St. Gregory's. Father Jim Shaughnessy officiated. Bob Welch played the organ while the church choir sang, “Here I Am Lord”, “Amazing Grace”, “On Eagles Wings”, “Song of Farewell” and “How Great Thou Art”. The pallbearers were Gary Adrian, Bill Besinger, Lance Mertes, Jacob Wempe, Jerry Luebbe and David Kongs. Burial was in St. Gregory's Catholic Cemetery. Elsie was born September 9, 1921 at Centralia, Kansas, the daughter of Elmer and Julia (Flentie) Sunderland. She graduated from Centralia High School in 1939. On October 5, 1943 she married Gerald Wempe at San Diego, California. After Gerald's discharge from the U.S. Army they moved back to Nemaha County. In 1959, Gerald and Elsie moved to Marysville where Elsie was the secrectary for Wempe Insurance from 1959 until retiring in 1983. She was also a substitute teacher at St. Gregory's Catholic School. Elsie was a member of St. Gregory's Catholic Church, Altar Society and Daughters of Isabella. She enjoyed playing cards, sewing, cooking, and playing golf at the Marysville Country Club where she was a member. Survivors include her husband, Gerald, of the home; daughter, Connie (Michael) Mertes, Racine, Wisc.; son, Rick (Cecilia) Wempe, Austin, Tex.; two grandchildren and three great-granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her parents; and four sisters, Evelyn Bergmann, Louise Pence, Pauline Ostercamp and Elma McGinnis.
