Gilbert C. Meier, 80, of Hanover, Kansas, formerly of Lincoln, Nebraska, died Monday, July 11, 2011, at the Hanover Hospital Long Term Care, where he has resided since June 8, 2011. A rosary service was held at 9:30 a.m., Friday, July 15, at St. John's Catholic Church in Hanover. The Mass of Christian Burial followed at 10:00 a.m. Father David Metz officiated. Burial was in St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Hanover. Gilbert was born October 10, 1930, on a farm north of Hanover, the son of George and Clara (Koppes) Meier. On January 2, 1951, he joined the National Guard and served 18 years. On May 28, 1966, he married Anna Griffin at Lincoln, Nebraska. Gilbert worked on the railroad for a few years and then worked for Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. in Lincoln. He was a member of St. Teresa's Catholic Church in Lincoln and Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed playing cards. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Frances Schwartz and Joan Hynek; brothers, Leonard, Clarence, Alvin and Victor; and brother-in-law, Clarence Schwartz. Survivors include his wife, Anna Meier, Lincoln, Neb.; stepson, Terry Whited, Aurora, Colo.; brother, Harold Meier, Loveland, Colo.; sister-in-laws, Eleanora Meier, Hanover, Lucille Meier, Aurora, Neb., Pearl Meier, Ames, Iowa, and Martha Meier, Marysville, Kan.; and brother-in-law, John Hynek, Hanover, Kan. The Hanover Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
