Ferne was born on August 16, 1913 on the family farm northwest of Vilets, Kansas, the daughter of John and Florence (Nelson) Johnson. She graduated from Frankfort High School and taught school in Marshall County for 5 years, then enrolled in cosmetology school in Topeka. On July 28, 1937 she married Joseph Swoboda, who was from Hanover. He died on August 20, 1991. They were married for 54 years. In 1941 her husband Joe was elected County Superintendent of Marshall County Schools and held that position until 1963 when he retired. Ferne was his secretary for 21 of those years, from 1942 to 1963. She was also a hairdresser. In 1967 Ferne and Joe moved to Vista, California where they managed the Sierra Vista Mobile Home Park where they resided. Ferne was a lifetime member of Delta Kappa Gamma Honor Society. Her hobbies included sewing, she loved her rose gardens, and she enjoyed baking cakes and cookies. Ferne got enjoyment from helping others and she gave her mailman a banana every day. She also loved doing her Christmas letters every year. Ferne had attended her bible study every Friday night for 9 years until moving back to Marysville to live out her days and years. She always wants all of us to know that she prayed daily for God's strength to help her through her days and thanked him for her salvation. I am sure she would tell us to do the same. She had her salvation with her Lord and she is now wth him. She is survived by two nieces, Karan Kay Johnson Ryser of Grove, Oklahoma and Beverlee Bee Coburn of Frankfort, and a nephew, Kenneth Johnson of Blue Rapids. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Joe, brothers, Kermit, Kenneth, Raymond, and Loren Johnson, and her sister, Minnie Johnson.
