Velma Peeks

Velma Theye Peeks, 93, of Marysville, KS, died Saturday, January 28, 2012 at Midland Hospice in Topeka, KS. A funeral service was held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, February 2, at the Evangelical United Church of Christ, Marysville. Rev. Judy Scott officiate. Tam Gordon played the organ while Pat Breeding sang “In the Garden” and “What a Wonderful World.” The congregation sang “Amazing Grace." The pallbearers were Roger Theye, Wayne Theye, Brian Boyda, Andre Boyda, Ronald Jurgens and Stephen C. Boyda. Burial was in the Marysville City Cemetery. Velma was born April 24, 1918 to Henry and Mary (Meyer) Theye at their rural home near Wymore, NE. She went to Pleasant Hill School in Nebraska. She was a member of the last German Confirmation class and was confirmed at State Line Lutheran Church. In August of 1941, she married Emil F. Peeks. They were partners in caring for the land, crops and livestock they raised together. She continued being an active and faithful steward of the family farm up until the time of her death. Velma worked at Mary Marshall Manor for 18 years preparing meals for residents. She loved planting colorful flowers and feeding the hummingbirds which returned each year to her yard and watching the fireflies as they arrived each spring. Velma was a member of Evangelical United Church of Christ. She was active in the church quilting group through December of 2011. Survivors include her daughters, Vernita Peeks, Marysville, KS, Marilyn Di Pasquale, Topeka, KS, and JoAnn Peeks, Houston, TX; brother, Clarence Theye, Odell, NE; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Emil, on September 30 1985; sisters, Rosa Helmrichs and Clara Jurgens; and brother, Albert Theye.
