Gertrude A. Cain, 93, of Beattie, KS, died June 3, 2012, at Cambridge Place Nursing Home, Marysville, KS. A rosary service was held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, June 5, at St. Malachy's Catholic Church, Beattie. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 6, at St. Malachy's. Father Jim Shaughnessy officiated. Jeannie Gerstner played the organ while Veronica Olmsted sang “Be Not Afraid”, “Prayer of St. Francis”, “Gift of Finest Wheat” and "On Eagles Wings.” The pallbearers were Eric Gerstner, Jami Wells, Jean Breedlove, Jude Hagenmaier, Luke Hagenmaier and Jeremy Hagenmaier. The honorary pallbearers were Mike Cain, Paul Cain, Charles Gerstner, Frank Hagenmaier, James Breedlove and Daniel Rottinghaus. Burial was in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Beattie, KS. Gertrude was born October 26, 1918 at Beattie, KS, to Anton Wenzel and Anna (Bernasek) Wenzel. In 1936, she graduated from Axtell High School. She was employed as a bookkeeper and office clerk in the Marshall County area for seven years. On February 10, 1944 she married Bill Cain at St. Malachy's Church. They located on a farm northwest of Beattie. She assited him with their farming, dairying, and raising a family. She was a member of St. Malachy's Church and Ladies Guild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, on November 19, 1994; parents, and brother, Edward Wenzl. Survivors include her children Jean (James) Breedlove, Lawrence, KS, Marita (Frank) Hagenmaier, Randolph, KS, Margaret (Charles) Gerstner, Frankfort, KS, Patricia (Daniel) Rottinghaus, Axtell, KS, and son, James and Erma, Topeka, KS; twelve grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A memorial fund has been established and will be designated at a later date. Contributions may be sent in care of Kinsley Mortuary.
