Lillian A. Wassenberg

Lillian A. Wassenberg, 90, of Home, KS, died Friday, August 24, 2012 at Cambridge Place in Marysville. Visitation was Monday, August 27, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. at Kinsley Mortuary in Marysville. A rosary service was held at 7 p.m., Monday, at St. Gregory's Catholic Church in Marysville. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, August 28, at St. Gregory's. Father Jim Shaughnessy officiated. Bob Welch played the organ while the church choir sang “Come to Me”, “Take My Hands”, “On Eagles Wings”, “You Are Mine” and “I Have Loved You”. The pallbearers were her grandsons, Steve Johnson, David Johnson, Mark Johnson, Lance Wassenberg, Ryan Wassenberg, Russ Wassenberg, Dustin Zutterman, Mark John Hartsook, Bryan Wassenberg and Nicholas Vaske. Burial was in St. Gregory's Catholic Cemetery. Lillian was born June 11, 1922 at Blue Rapids, KS, daughter of Charles E. and Christina (Vopata) Novak. She attended school at Blue Rapids and graduated from Blue Rapids High School in 1940. On April 11, 1944 she married Gilbert Wassenberg at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church. To this union seven children were born. They lived and farmed north of Home. Lillian dearly loved her grandchildren and was affectionally known as “Grandma Wassy”. When the grandchildren could visit or stay she loved playing cards with them, taking them fishing at the creek, and playing marbles with them. She enjoyed visiting with her neighbors and quilting until her hands could no longer hold a needle. She was always up for a game of marbles and everyone always wanted her for their partner. Survivors include three sons, Larry (Rhonda) Wassenberg, Home, KS, Lee (Ann) Wassenberg, Lincoln, NE, and Lynn (Tracy) Wassenberg, Home, KS; three daughters, Betty (Bill) Johnson, Topeka, KS, Mary (Dave) Zutterman, Marysville, and Lisa (Keith) Hartsook, Herkimer, KS; sisters-in-law, Betty Novak, Reno, NV, and Delores Wassenberg, Midland, TX; nineteen grandchildren; forty-one great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gilbert, on May 27, 2004; son, Mark, on Feb. 12, 1975; four brothers, Charles Novak, Emil Novak, Antone “Tony” Novak and Emanuel “Tuffer” Novak; and one great-grandson, Kaleb Wassenberg. A memorial fund has been established and will be designated at a later date. Contributions may be sent in care of Kinsley Mortuary.
