Maurice D. Goeckel, 86, of Hanover, KS, died Wednesday, August 29, 2012 at Mercy Regional Health Center in Manhattan, KS. A rosary service was held at 7 p.m., Sunday, at St. John's Catholic Church in Hanover. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 a.m., Monday, September 3, at St. John's Catholic Church. Father David Metz officiated. The musicians were Janet Fritschi and Kelsey Goodwin. Music included “Here I Am Lord”, “You’ll Be There”, “On Eagles Wings”, “You Are Mine” and “Go Rest High On That Mountain”. The pallbearers were Ben Goeckel, Kevin Wilson, Scott Samland, Jon Penner, John Ayers and Tony Penner. Burial was in the St. John's Catholic cemetery. Maurice was born July 9, 1926 at Washington, KS, son of Henry Sr., and Magdalene (Materi) Goeckel. He attended Sunnyside Country School. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII from 1945 - 1946. After his honorable discharge he returned to Hanover and farmed. On December 31, 1951 he married Dolores Burdick at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca, KS. Maurice was a life-long farmer. He loved farming and spending time with family and friends. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Hanover American Legion and was a past member of the Hanover Elevator Board. Survivors include his children, Jerry (Connie) Goeckel, Larned, KS, Jim (Pam) Goeckel, Hanover, Jean Ann (Delmar, Jr.) Wilson, Marysville, Jane (Rick) Samland, Hollenberg, KS, and Judy (Brian) Warren, Lincoln, NE; one brother, Henry (Hedy) Goeckel, Jr., Hanover; sixteen grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dolores, on April 25, 2005; and brother, Verlin Goeckel. A memorial fund has been established and will be designated later.
