Betty Lorene Marie (Nelson) Froom, 79, of Marysville, KS, died Thursday, September 6, 2012 at Cambridge Place in Marysville. A funeral service was held at 3:30 p.m., Sunday, September 9, at Salem Lutheran Church, Axtell. Rev. Mark Rich & LM David Winquist officiated. Shirley Polson played the organ and Iris Turnbull was the soloist. Music included “Ivory Palaces”, “Children of the Heavenly Father”, “Nearer My God to Thee” and “How Great Thou Art.” The pallbearers were Jesse Nickelson, Lyle Wenzl, Caleb Nickelson, Allan Dorrance, Dr. Douglas Ensley and Louis Gene Simmons. The honorary pallbearers were Harold Nelson, George Olson, Charles Froom, Duane Polson, Ted Ensley and Wendell Vandorn. Burial was in the Salem Lutheran Cemetery. Betty was born December 25, 1932 at Frankfort, KS, to Bern and Ruth (Gustafson) Nelson. She was baptized and confirmed at Mission Covenant Church, Axtell. On September 25, 1954 she married John P. Froom at Mission Covenant Church. In 1954, she joined Salem Lutheran Church. Betty went to secretarial school in Kansas City and worked for Southwestern Bell from 1952 until 1954. She enjoyed golfing, watching Kansas State University Basketball and Football, and gardening her strawberry patch. Survivors include her daughter, Marie Froom, Marysville; brother, Harold (Opal) Nelson, Lansing, KS, two sisters, Elna (Ted) Ensley, Topeka, KS, and Marylyn (Lyle) Wenzl, Vermillion, KS. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John, on March 13, 1991; and brother, John Nelson. A memorial fund has been established and will be designated later.
