Edward F. Wiegers, 80, of Marysville, KS, died Friday, June 28, 2013 at the Nebraska Heart Institute in Lincoln, NE. Visitation was Monday, July 1, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., at Kinsley Mortuary in Marysville. A rosary service was held at 7 p.m., Monday, at St. Gregory's Catholic Church in Marysville. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 2, at St. Gregory's. Father Jim Shaughnessy officiated. Cindy Voet was the organist. Wayne Kruse sang "On Eagles Wings" and "Amazing Grace". The church choir sang "Here I Am Lord", "Prayer of St. Francis" and "Song of Farewell". The pallbearers were Michael Wiegers, Robert Wiegers, Keith Holle, Brandon Holle, Wiley Kannarr and Don Landoll. The honorary pallbearers were Jim Lindeen, Ed Taphorn, Bill Buck, Bud Schuette, Jason Brinegar, Rev. Marilyn Sweet and Leanna Stenglemeier. Burial was in the church cemetery. Ed was born January 19, 1933, at St. Joseph, MO, son of Richard and S. Ann (Koelzer) Wiegers. He graduated from Marysville High School in 1950. In 1954, he graduated from Emporia State University with a bachelor’s degree in education. In 1957, he received a law degree from Washburn University. On December 27, 1958 he married Mary Gabel at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Topeka, KS. In 1949, he enlisted in the Kansas Army National Guard. He served as Judge Advocate, was a member of the Kansas Military Board and Kansas Armory Board. After 35 years of military service he retired as a Colonel in 1984. Ed was a long time attorney in Marshall and Washington counties. During his career he served on many local and state boards and committees including as Marshall County Attorney, Mayor for the City of Marysville, Marysville Township Board, Marysville Planning Commission, Community Memorial Healthcare, St. Gregory’s School, Kansas Bar Association Ethics Committee and Awards Committee, Marshall County Habitat for Humanity Foundation, Original Pony Express Home Station, Kansas Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board and Kansas Commission on Veterans' Affairs. He served as trustee of the Helvering Trust, Viola Cooksey Trust and President of the Guise-Weber Foundation. He was a member of St. Gregory’s Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus 4th Degree, Lions, Eagles, Jaycees, Moose and American Legion Smnr Post 163. Ed enjoyed flying, golfing and gardening. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, George Wiegers; and a great-granddaughter. Survivors include his wife, Mary, of the home; two daughters, Patty Holle and husband, Keith, Marysville, and Susan Kannarr and husband, Wiley, Topeka; two sons, Michael Wiegers and wife, Lynn, Baldwin City, KS, and Robert Wiegers and wife, Lisa, Orlando, FL; three sisters, Rosemary Meador, Marysville, Helen Pierson, Arizona, and Ann Dabbas, Amman Jordan; and two grandchildren. A memorial fund has been established in his name and will be designated at a later date. Contributions may be sent in care of Kinsley Mortuary, 1006 Broadway, Marysville, KS 66508.
