Leon D. Ackerman, 85, of Oviedo, FL, died Monday, August 12, 2013 at Hospice of the Comforter in Altamonte Springs, FL. A wake service was held at 7 p.m., Friday, August 23, at St. Gregory's Catholic Church in Marysville. A funeral service was at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 24, at St. Gregory's Catholic Church. Fr. Jim Shaughnessy officiated. Rosemary Forst accompanied the choir as they sang "Here I Am Lord", "Prayer of St. Francis", "On Eagles Wings", "You Are Mine", and "How Great Thou Art." Burial was in the Marysville City Cemetery. Leon was born May 18, 1928 at Marysville, KS, to Leonard and Eva (Stiverson) Ackerman. He graduated from Marysville High School and attended Kansas University. On July 4, 1954, he married Frances Cavanaugh at St Patrick’s Cathedral, New York, NY. He worked for Martin Marietta as a quality control engineer, for over thirty years, working on space shuttle and other NASA projects. Leon was an active member of the Lions Club for many years. He loved spending time with the family and once his children were grown, he especially enjoyed time spent with his grandchildren. He loved football, and played at Marysville High School, where he never lost a game during his four years there. He was an avid Denver Broncos fan and enjoyed attending games or watching on television. Leon and Frances loved traveling and managed to visit many places both in the US and abroad. Preceding him in death were his parents; two sons, Richard and Michael Ackerman; and brothers, Dale and Gene Ackerman. Surviving him is his wife, Frances, Oviedo, FL; sons, Steve (Della) Ackerman, Alexandria, VA, Dennis (Eleni) Ackerman, Austin, TX, Jerry (Nancy) Ackerman, Aviedo, FL; twelve grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. A memorial fund has been established in his name and will be designated later. Contributions may be sent in care of Kinsley Mortuary. Burial will be in the Marysville City Cemetery.
