Genevieve "Genny" Wakefield, 88, of Marysville, KS, died Saturday, September 28, 2013 at Cambridge Place in Marysville. Visitation was Monday, 1 to 8 p.m., at Kinsley Mortuary. The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m. A funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 1, at the United Methodist Church in Marysville. Rev. Dale Lewis officiated. The musicians were Deb Landoll, Gail Gilkerson and Kirk Gilkerson. Music included “Victory in Jesus”, “When We All Get to Heaven” and “Precious Lord, Take My Hand”. The pallbearers were John Pope, Jenell Rosol, Chris Rosol, Steve McGhee, Bryan McGhee, Paige McGhee and Mike Wakefield. The honorary pallbearers were Bill & Vicki Phillipi, Dan & Fran Feldhausen, Bud & Pat Schuette, Dale & Debby Henderson, Wil & Gail Gilkerson and Kenny & Connie Fenstermacher. Burial was in Prospect Hill Cemetery. Genevieve was born January 10, 1925 in Grand Island, NE, the daughter of Gerhard and Marie (Wiese) Brabander. In 1943, she graduated from Grand Island Senior High. She then attended school in Omaha where she learned telegraphy and had worked for the Union Pacific Railroad as a telegrapher during World War II. On December 1, 1946, she married Lincoln H. Pope. He preceded her in death on October 14, 1974. After his death she returned to work for the Union Pacific. On May 1, 1977, she married Howard E. Wakefield. He preceded her in death on May 3, 2009. Genevieve was a member of the United Methodist Church, church circle, American Legion Auxiliary, UPOT Employees Club, and had been a member of the Mystery Sisters Card Club for over 40 years. Through the years she enjoyed sewing, crafting, bowling, cards, dancing, puzzles, crossword puzzles and traveling with friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; and husbands, Lincoln and Howard. Survivors include her son, Jerry (Janice) Pope, Blue Rapids, KS; daughter, Gail (Larry) McGhee, Shawnee, KS; stepson, Ron (Maria) Wakefield, Durango, CO; two brothers, Bernhard Brabander, Camarillo, CA, and Arthur Brabander, Pico Rivera, CA; five grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren. A memorial fund has been established and will be designated at a later date. Contributions may be sent in care of Kinsley Mortuary.
