Waltraud “Wally” I. Schmitz, 86, of Marysville, KS, died Tuesday, December 10, 2013 at Community Memorial Healthcare in Marysville. Visitation was Friday, December 13, from 3 to 9 p.m., at Kinsley Mortuary in Marysville. A funeral service was held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, December 14, at St Gregory’s Catholic Church in Marysville. Father Jim Shaughnessy officiated. The pallbearers were Lance Davis, Paul Goldman, Dick Nordhus, David Schwarz, Ronald Schmitz and Francis Schmitz. Burial was in St. Gregory's Catholic Cemetery. Wally was born April 13, 1927 at Marienwerder, West Prussia, to Hermann Albert and Helene Julianna (Broeschke) Rasch. On September 3, 1947, she married Vere Dominic Schmitz in an Army Chapel in Stuttgard, Germany. They moved to Marysville shortly after their marriage and owned and operated Rural Gas Service for over 38 years. Wally was a stay at home mom until her children graduated high school and then worked at the family business as secretary and bookkeeper. Wally stayed active with the German Fest. She liked to play cards with the family, loved gardening and animals. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Vere, February 10, 1992; and a brother, Gerhardt Rasch, in 2003. Survivors include her daughters, Ingrid Cartinelle, Denver, CO, Barbara (Mark) Schultz, Bonsall, CA, and Christine (Paul Goldman) Davis, Pearland, TX; sister, Christel Keller, Hamburg, Germany; two grandchildren, Lance Davis, Boston, MA, and Amber Clements, Woodlands, TX; and four great grandchildren, Dominik Passmore, Mason Clements, Isabella Clements and Henry Davis. A memorial fund has been established in her name. Contributions may be sent in care of Kinsley Mortuary.
