Marvin G. Utecht, 94, of Marysville, KS, died Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at Cambridge Place in Marysville. Mass of Christian Burial was at 10:30 a.m., Monday, December 16, at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church. Father Jim Shaughnessy officiated. Bob Welch played the organ while the church choir sang “Prayer of St. Francis”, “How Great Thou Art”, “Ave Maria”, “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” and “You Are Mine”. The pallbearers were Chris Weston, Carl Corns, Ryan Weston, Pat Hughes, Jeff Weston and Charles David Ellenbecker. The honorary pallbearers were Scott Utecht, Jeff Hughes, Donnie Hughes, Bill Schwindamann, Charlie Schwindamann and Ronnie Schwindamann. Burial was in St. Gregory's Catholic Cemetery. Marvin was born February 5, 1919, at Tacoma, WA, to Emil and Helen (Brull) Utecht. In 1937, he graduated from St. Joseph Military Academy at Hays, KS. After completing his education, Marvin served in the U.S. Navy as an AMM 2/C, during WWII. On September 6, 1948, Marvin was united in marriage to Catherine “Cathy” Hughes at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca, KS. He worked for the Marshall County News until 1964 and was employed by the Leavenworth Times until 1981, when he retired. Marvin was a member of St. Gregory’s Catholic Church, American Legion Post #163, and Retired Member Council Communication Workers of America. Preceding him in death were his parents; and brother, killed in action in 1944, Willis A. Utecht. Survivors include his wife, Cathy; sons, Robert Utecht, Huntsville, AL, and Michael Utecht, Boise, ID; daughter, Patricia Weston, Littleton, CO; sister, Helen Ellenbecker, Marysville; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
