Marla Kay Doebele, 68, of Hanover, KS, passed away unexpectedly Friday, December 12, 2013 at the Hanover Hospital. Visitation was Sunday, December 15, noon until 8 p.m., at the Hanover Mortuary. A funeral service was held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, December 16, at Zion Lutheran Church in Hanover. Pastor Donna Florio officiated. Mae Nieman played the organ while the congregation sang “The Lord’s Prayer”, “How Great Thou Art”, “On Eagles Wings” and “Precious Lord, Take My Hand”. The pallbearers were Ty Becker, Jim Brod, Patrick Jeardoe, Micheal Meier, Floyd Rettig, and David Trauernicht. Burial was in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Hanover. Marla was born December 24, 1944, at Odell, NE, to John W. and Wilda L. (Ramsey) Berry. She lived with her family in California and Idaho until settling in Nebraska. Marla was baptized at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Beatrice. She worked in the speech department and at the living units at the Beatrice State Home and was a CNA at the Beatrice Manor. On October 15, 1994, she married Leonard Doebele and moved to Hanover. She worked as the Activities Director at the Hanover Hospital Long Term Care Unit. She spent her life caring for elderly and the mentally disabled. She was very active in a number of community organizations including the American Legion Auxiliary, TOPS, Pony Express Red Hat Society, Unique Ingeneuers, and Women of ELCA (WELCA). Marla enjoyed reading Stephen King novels, camping, crocheting, knitting, solving suduko, and cheering for the Nebraska Cornhuskers in a house divided during football season. She especially loved spending time with her family and friends. Survivors include her husband, Leonard; sons, Scott (Linda) Bates, Beatrice, NE, and Jim Bates, Breckenridge, TX; daughter, Tamra Doebele, Kansas City, KS; sister, Sharon (Jerry) Holtmeier, Diller, NE; sisters-in-law, Sheryl Doebele, Beatrice, NE, and Charlene Lesperance, Concordia, KS; grandchildren, Brandi Bates, Brandon Bates, Matt Cox, Christopher Hansel, Amber Bates, Casey Grella and Samantha Grella; and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and great-grandson, Boston D. Bates. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to the Zion Lutheran Church or Hanover Long Term Care.
