C. Elvin Shum, 93, of Home, KS, died Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at Cambridge Place in Marysville. A funeral service was held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, February 21, at the United Methodist Church, Marysville. Rev. Dale Lewis and Sister Eulalia Kloeker officiated. Ruth Ann Gee played the piano while Mike Gee, Aaron Gee and Matt Gee sang "The Old Rugged Cross", "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art". The recessional hymn was "Daddy's Hands". The pallbearers were Joe Shum, Justin Shum, Kayne Shum, Chas Maloney, Shane Maloney, Gavin Maloney, Jim Shum, Brian Shum, Adam Teske, Jarrod Smith and Sean Southerland. The honorary pallbearers were Katy Smith, Laura Shum, Karmen Shum Stephanie Shum, Laura Shum and Audra Teske. Burial was at 2 p.m., Friday, at the Washington City Cemetery. Elvin was born July 21, 1920 at Greenleaf, KS, son of Charles A. and Lura E. Freeman. He attended rural schools in Washington County and Washington High School. On August 14, 1949, he married Bessie Holbrook at Washington, KS. He farmed near Washington and worked at the Washington Elevator. He went to work for Continental Grain and transferred to Home City in 1956. In 1982, after 25 years he retired and then worked part-time at Skyline Truck Stop. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, William Charles Shum; brothers, Lloyd Shum, Forrest Shum and Marvin Shum; and sisters, Vera Cox and Opal Shum. Survivors include his wife, Bessie, of Home; four sons, John (JoAnn) Shum, Home, Steve (Donna) Shum, Stafford, NY, Larry (Kathy) Shum, Marysville, and Keith (Becky) Shum, El Dorado, KS; two daughters, Cindy (Tom) Graham, St. Mary's, KS, and Marie (Rob) Maloney, Wichita, KS; 15 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
