He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Merlin, Ray and Vernon. He is survived by his sisters, Lorna Slupianek and Wilma (Herb) Plegge, both of Marysville, Mary Ellen (Nick) Nichols of Hawaiian Gardens, CA; brother, Bill (Shirley) of Topeka; and numerous nieces and nephews. Born on Meadow Brook Farm in the home built by his grandfather Fritz, he attended Riggert and Bethlehem Grade Schools and graduated from Marysville High School in 1950. He served in the US Army from 1952-1954, attaining the rank of sergeant. He was a sixty year member of the Marysville American Legion and kept many life-long friendships with his old Army friends. Harry remained single and lived at Meadow Brook, often taking vacation from his thirty year career as a Field Claims Adjuster with Bremen Farmers Mutual Insurance Company to help his folks on the farm. He was an avid photographer, providing others with and filling countless personal albums, with pictures of Marshall County everyday life, including weddings, softball games, confirmations, as well as farm scenes, sunsets and the beauty of nature. Harry loved hearing and telling jokes and as everyone he met throughout his many travels knew, puns were his favorite. A man of strong faith, he served as Treasurer of Bethlehem Lutheran Church for many years and was very active in church matters. In his latter years, he would often ask family visitors to join him in singing songs, from memory, from the Lutheran Hymnal, especially treasuring those from children’s Christmas Eve programs. Harry had a profound love and knowledge of Baseball, easily and flawlessly reciting stats for any major league player back to the 1890’s. In his youth, he was a sought after player with many local teams including Bremen, Lone Elm, Odell, and Marysville. He often honed his batting skills with a broomstick, by hitting corn cobs, pitched by brothers Ray and Bill in their barnyard. One of his favorite memories involved the old Herkimer ballpark with his Uncle Dick Scheele taking admissions, Uncle Herman Gleue directing the parking of cars and Bill Westermann announcing the games (accompanied by march music on a record player). Along with Will Linkugel, Charles Sidman and others, he was a co-founder and statistical resource for the Ballpark Baseball Card Game featured at the Ballpark Restaurant in Lawrence, KS. A memorial fund has been established to Good Shepherd Lutheran School Association in Marysville. Contributions may be sent in care of Kinsley Mortuary, Marysville. The family especially wishes to express their gratitude for the loving hands of Chaplin Sara Blodgett, who helped guide Harry through his last moments.
