Walter H. Niemann, 88, of Hanover, Kan., died April 1, 2014 at Cambridge Place in Marysville.Visitation was Friday, April 4, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., at the Hanover Mortuary in Hanover, Kan.  The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m.A funeral service was held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, April 5 at Ward Funeral Home in Washington.  The Rev. Steven Kahrs officiated.Nancy Krueger played the organ while the congregation sang "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and "A Mighty Fortress".  Pam Harrison sang "Amazing Grace".The pallbearers were John Stigge, Larry Stigge, Robert Haley, Nathan Haley, Lyman Lyle and Doug Starr.The honorary pallbearers were Scott Tegtmeier, Lawrence Tegtmeier, Austin Harrison, Steven Stigge, Dennis Kolle, Merlin Stigge, Vernon Stigge, Butch McCue, Hugh Lyle and Bob Jewell.Burial was in the Washington City Cemetery with graveside military funeral honors provided by the Hanover American Legion.Walter was born June 14, 1925 at Bremen, Kan., son of Fred and Mary (Wendt) Niemann.  He was baptized June 25, 1925 and confirmed April 2, 1939 by Rev. Dr. William Mahler.  Walter served in the U.S. Army during WWII.  After his honorable discharge he returned and farmed in the Hanover area.He was the last member of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Washington, Kan., and then transferred his membership to St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Cortland, Neb.He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Henry, Wilfred, Wilmer and infant Frederick; sisters, Marie Mishey, Martha Koeneke, and Selma Kolle; and his brothers-in-law.Survivors include sisters, Mildred Stigge, Linn, Kan., Loretta Stigge, Washington, Kan., Florence McGrath, Greenleaf, Kan., Norma Haley, Topeka, Kan., and Verla Harrison, Hanover, Kan.; special nephew, Delmer Koeneke, Lincoln, Neb.; and many nephews and nieces.A memorial fund has been established to St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Cortland, Neb.  Contributions may be sent in care of the Hanover Mortuary.
