Robert "Bob" Shanek, 79, of Blue Rapids, died April 12, 2014 at the Blue Valley Nursing Home.Visitation was Tuesday, April 15, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., at Kinsley Mortuary in Marysville. The family received friends 6 to 8 p.m.A funeral service was held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 16, at St. Monica-St. Elizabeth Catholic Church at Blue Rapids. Father Pat Sullivan officiated. Moogie Roeder played the organ while Rheta Matson sang “Here I Am Lord” and “Amazing Grace.”The pallbearers were Mike Lake, Eddie Lake, David Claeys, Jim Zabokrtsky, David Brady and Russell Nemechek.The honorary pallbearers were Raymond O’Neil, Al Rombeck, Marvin Weeks and Larry Price.Burial was in the Fairmont Cemetery, Blue Rapids.Bob was born on December 11, 1934, at Home, Kan., to Clyde and Nellie (Koch) Shanek. In 1953, he graduated from Beattie High School. Bob served in the U.S. Army.He worked as a mechanic for Wayne Svoboda Repair and as a meat cutter at Boogarts. He then went to driving a truck for the State of Kansas Highway Department. Bob liked riding motorcycles and was a big Green Bay Packer fan.He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Jean Lake in 1973; and brother, Dale Bud Shanek in 1984.Survivors include his son, Robert E. Shanek, Waterville; special friend, Shirley Mitschler, Marysville; and sister, Sherry (Jim) Zabokrtsky, Marysville.A memorial fund has been established to be designated later. Contributions may be sent in care of Kinsley Mortuary, Marysville.
