Alma Jean Johnson Simmons was born on February 10, 1936 in Frankfort, Kansas to Oscar and Elizabeth (Thomas) Johnson. She grew up on a farm near Frankfort, Kansas where she attended grade school. As a young girl, Alma spent most of her time helping with family, raising her siblings and farm chores. Alma lived most of her life in St. George, Kansas. She worked various jobs but was primarily self employed as a housekeeper. Alma enjoyed watching television, playing cards, dancing and going out with friends. She is remembered for her kindness to others and love for her children. Alma loved her family very much and always enjoyed visitors. Alma passed away on Sunday, August 30, 2009 at the Golden Living Center Valhaven in Valley, Nebraska at the age of 73 years, 6 months and 20 days. She was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Elizabeth; sister, Oscarine Sunnenberg; and brothers, Henry Sunnenberg and Johnny Michael Sunnenberg. Survivors include her son, Thomas Johnson, Omaha; daughters, Lori Bluma, Ocala, FL, and Cindy Bluma, Louisville, KS; 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren; siblings, Josephine Wiggins, Marysville, KS, Donald Sunnenberg, Anna Mae Slack and Vera Roberta Ross, all of Wamego, KS, Jerry Sunnenberg, Joplin, MO, Vincent Sunnenberg, Arkansas City, KS, and Rita Chauza, Douglas, NE. A graveside service will be held Saturday, May 17, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in the Frankfort City Cemetery. Father Jim Shaughnessy will officiate. Padden Funeral Chapel is in charge of local arrangements.
