Joseph “Joe” Louis Bernasek, 93, died Wednesday, July 30, 2014, at the Life Care Center, Seneca, KS. Visitation was Sunday, August 3, from noon until 4 p.m. at Kinsley Mortuary in Marysville. A rosary service was held at 7 p.m., Sunday, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Axtell. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 a.m., Monday, August 4, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church. Father Albert Hauser officiated. Kathy Buessing played the organ while the church choir sang “I Am the Bread of Life”, “Amazing Grace”, “In Every Age” and “How Great Thou Art”. The pallbearers were Joe Bernasek, John Rundle, Merlin Macke, Keith Bernasek, Barry Buessing and Marvin Bernasek. The honorary pallbearers were George Bernasek, Dick Bernasek and Dennis Bernasek. Burial was in St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Axtell American Legion. Joe was born on September 16, 1920 near Summerfield, KS, to Joseph and Mildred (Malecek) Bernasek, Sr. He served with the U.S. Army during WWII. He learned to fly with the GI Bill and earned his pilot license. He farmed south of Summerfield and raised livestock. He was united in marriage to Elsie Sejkora. He was a simple man and enjoyed reading. Joe was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, the VFW and Axtell American Legion. Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Elsie; son, Tim Bernasek in 1976; brothers, Charlie Bernasek, Frank Bernasek, John Bernasek and Don Bernasek; and sister, Anna Brown Rundle. Survivors include daughter, Kathy Waldon; three grandchildren, Adam, Jerry and Amber and her husband, Charles; and two great-grandchildren, Sophya and Paisley. Memorials may be made to St. Michael's Catholic School and sent in care of the Axtell-Landreth Funeral Home.
