Doris Mae Gallagher of Axtell, KS, died October 4, 2014 after a courageous battle with cancer, having reached the age of 81 years, 4 months, and 16 days. She was born at home near Beattie, KS, on May 18, 1933, the oldest child and only daughter of George and Elnora (Genschoreck) Rombeck. She attended Life School (a country school near her home) through the 8th grade and graduated from Beattie High School as a member of the Class of 1951. After graduation, she worked at the Phillip's Drug Store until marrying Leonard Gallagher on April 21, 1954. To this union eight children were born. Together Leonard and Doris Mae worked the farm, ran a dairy, and raised hogs over the years. In 1988, they sold the farm and moved to Axtell. Doris was a loving and devoted farm wife. She loved to crochet, embroidery, and make hand-made quilts. Each of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren have a quilt that she made for them. She also loved to garden, play cards, and travel, and attend as many functions as possible that her grandchildren were involved in. She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Ladies Guild, Wednesday Card Club, Thursday Card Club, and the Stitch and Chatter Club. For many years she enjoyed singing in the Church Choir. She volunteered her time for over 15 years to assist praying the Rosary with the residents of the Seneca Nursing Home. For several years she also cared for the flowers at St. Michael's Church. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1993; oldest son, David in 2003; parents; parents-in-law; three brothers-in-law; and three sisters-in-law. Survivors include her children, Dennis Gallagher, Herkimer, KS, Donald Gallagher, Axtell, KS, Daniel Gallagher and wife Jean, Blue Rapids, KS, Deloris White and husband Todd, Steinauer, NE, Donna Muldoon and husband Mark, Austin, TX, Darlene Gallagher, Axtell, and Darrell Gallagher, Frankfort, KS; daughter-in-law, Vicky Gallagher, Atoka, TN; eight grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, three great grandchildren, five step-great grandchildren; brothers, Melvin Rombeck and wife Sherri, Bethany, MO, and Alfred Rombeck and wife Dorothy, Home, KS; two brothers-in-law, three sisters-in-law, and numerous extended family and friends. Visitation was Wednesday, October 8, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Axtell-Landreth Funeral Home in Axtell. The Rosary was prayed at 7 p.m., Wednesday, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Axtell. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 a.m., Thursday, October 9, at St. Michael's Catholic Church. The musicians were Linda Heinen, Judy Glynn, Cheryl Reinecke and Wayne Kruse. Music included “Amazing Grace”, “In the Garden”, “Prayer of St. Francis”, “I Am the Bread of Life”, “How Great Thou Art” and “The Old Rugged Cross”. The pallbearers were Tyler Bursovsky, Tony Bursovsky, Evan Eckhout, Brandon Gallagher, Travis Robeson, Jeremy Wilburn, Lenny Muldoon and Robby Muldoon. The honorary pallbearers were Jerry Gallagher, Jeff Rombeck, Dave Strathman, Darrell Heinen, and Don Strohmeyer. Burial was in St. Michael's Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established and will be designated by the family. Contributions may be sent in care of the Axtell-Landreth Funeral Home.
