Gelvin Ekstrum, 79, passed away Friday, October 3 at Cambridge Place in Marysville. A funeral service was held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 7, at Kinsley Mortuary in Marysville. Jay Williamson officiated. Deb Landoll played the organ while Pat Breeding sang "Old Rugged Cross" and "In the Garden". Pallbearers were Edwin Ekstrum, Terry Ekstrum, Allen Ekstrum, Brian Ekstrum, Corey Ekstrum, George Bernasek, Kermet Ekstrum and John Griffee. Burial was in the Beattie Union Cemetery. Gelvin was born December 14, 1928, at Blaine, KS, the son of Arthur Susie (Wolfgang) Ekstrum. On February 14, 1956, he married Marilyn Zentz. They lived north-east of Marysville for 40 years. Marilyn preceded him in death on February 5, 2005. Gelvin worked with his brother, Francis, as a painter. He also farmed. He enjoyed his grandchildren, farming, gardening and his dog. He also loved eating the sweets his wife made including apple pie. From 1948 to 1959 Gelvin was in the National Guard. He was also preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Francis and Donald Ekstrum. Survivors include one daughter, Susan Bernasek of Axtell, KS; two sons, Edwin Ekstrum of Marysville, and Terry Ekstrum of Frankfort, KS; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. A memorial fund has been established and will be designated at a later date. Contributions may be sent in care of the mortuary.
