Jervis “Jerry” Chester Rowe, 75, of Tohatchi, New Mexico, passed away October 20. 2008, at Rehoboth McKinley Christian Hospital in Gallup, New Mexico. A funeral service was held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 25, at Kinsley Mortuary in Marysville. Pastor Jill Rettig officiated. Bob Welch played the organ while Gloria Rowe sang "Danny Boy", "Ave Maria" and "Amazing Grace". Pallbearers were David Rowe, Stephan Rowe, Alex Rowe, Kevin Evers, Sean Massar and Mike Dettke. Graveside committal services were held in the Marysville City Cemetery. The American Legion Post #163 provided Military Honors. Jervis was born October 30, 1932 in Marysville, the son of Chester Edward and Hertha Irene (Dettke) Rowe. He graduated from rural Fairfield School and was a 1950 graduate of Marysville High School. He earned Bachelors and Masters degrees from Kansas State University. While attending Kansas State University, he was a member of the track team, specifically the mile relay team that held the national record for over 20 years. Upon graduation he entered the United States Air Force with the rank of Lieutenant. After being stationed in numerous bases in Arizona, Texas, Maine, and Tuele, Greenland, he left the service and entered the teaching profession. Advanced mathematics was his expertise, which he utilized while teaching in a bilingual high school in Berlin, Germany. He also taught in high schools in Kansas, Colorado, and lastly in New Mexico. Even though Jerry had been in poor health for a number of years, he will be missed by his wife Katherine, Tohatchi, NM; two sons, David Rowe and wife Tammy of Illinois, Stephan Rowe of New York, NY; two daughters, Susan Evers and husband Kenny, Jr., of Illinois, and Gloria Rowe of Illinois; one sister, Virginia Rowe Bronson of Austin, TX; four grandchildren, Emily Evers, Kevin Evers, Olivia Flerra, and Alex Rowe, all of Illinois; one niece, Barbara Garza of Austin, TX; one nephew, Steven Bronson of Austin, TX; and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents. A memorial fund has been established and contributions may be made to Peripheral Neuropathy Association, 60 East 42nd, Suite 942, New York, NY 10165, www.neuropathy.org, or to a charity of your choice.
