Gerald Dean Detweiler, 81, of Summerfield, KS, died Sunday, November 23, 2014 at Cambridge Place in Marysville. A funeral service was held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, November 28, at Kinsley Mortuary in Marysville. Rev. Greg Stuckwisch officiated. Deb Landoll played the organ while Wayne Kruse sang "Amazing Grace". The honorary pallbearers were Blake Brooks, Ryan Borland, Kurt Detweiler, Derek Borland, Teresa Hartman, Eric Detweiler, Carrie deKoning and David Detweiler. Gerald born January 23, 1933 near Frankfort, KS, to Ray and Marie (Graham) Detweiler. He was one of the last students to attend Mina Grade School and graduated from Summerfield High School in 1951. He was a lifelong farmer in the Summerfield area. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing and gardening. The last two years he raised a big corn and watermelon patch so he could share with his neighbors. Gerald liked to watch sports and attend his children’s, grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s ballgames and activities. Family was important to him and was the love of his life. He always had treats for his great-grandchildren. On July 12, 1952, he was united in marriage to Rita Smith. She survives. Other survivors include his children, Jack Detweiler, Summerfield, Wayne (Lola) Detweiler, Summerfield, Christine Brooks, Axtell, Richard Detweiler, Summerfield, and Sandra (Jerry) Borland, Ft. Worth, TX; eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. His parents and brother, Raymond, preceded him in death. Memorials may be made to the Summerfield Community Café, Meadowlark Hospice or to help fight Parkinson’s disease and may be sent in care of Kinsley Mortuary.
