Velda Shepherd, 88, Marysville, died Friday, January 2, 2015 at Community Memorial Healthcare, Marysville. A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 6, 2015 at the First Christian Church, Marysville. Visitation is from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday, January 5 at Kinsley Mortuary, Marysville. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Burial will be in Marysville City Cemetery. Velda was born April 2, 1926 near Summerfield, KS, to Sigmund R. and Minnie (Heiserman) Oehm. She attended country schools around Oketo, Beattie and Summerfield. She worked at Russell Stovers and Modern Cleaners in Lincoln, Nebraska before returning to Marysville to marry Leland Shepherd on November 23, 1952 at Wamego, KS. Velda then worked at Poell’s Band Box Cleaners, and then for her parents at the Oehm’s Band Box Cleaners until the Shepherd’s purchased the cleaners in 1959 and operated it until their retirement in 1994. Together Leland and Velda owned Shepherd’s Band Box Cleaners in Marysville from 1959-1994. As the middle of eleven children, Velda loved spending time with her large family and following her grandchildren’s sporting events until her health prevented her from doing so. Before retirement, she and Leland enjoyed traveling, camping, golfing, and bowling. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Marysville. Survivors include her husband, Leland; son, John Shepherd (wife Kelly) of Chaska, Minnesota; daughter, Joni Spellmeier (husband Chris) of Marysville; sisters, Laura Shortle, Topeka, Ruby Harmer, Grace Saathoff, both of Marysville; brother, Ray Oehm, Marysville; and grandchildren, Mitchell Shepherd, Jenna Shepherd, Scott Spellmeier, Sean Spellmeier and step-granddaughter Amanda Whitehead; 1 great-granddaughter and 2 step-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Rudolph, Everett, Orval, and George; sisters, Marie Burd and Opal Cudney. A memorial fund has been established and will be designated later by the family. Contributions may be sent in care of the mortuary.
