Gerald Wempe, 96, of Marysville, KS, died January 21, 2015 at Cambridge Place in Marysville. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., Sunday, January 25 at Kinsley Mortuary in Marysville. A rosary service will be held at 7 p.m., Sunday, at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church in Marysville. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 26 at St. Gregory’s. Father Jim Shaughnessy will officiate. Rosemary Forst will play the organ while Ron and Fran Grauer lead in singing “Be Not Afraid”, “Here I Am Lord”, “Hosea”, “You Are Mine” and “My Eyes Have Seen the Glory”. The Knights of Columbus will serve as pallbearers. Burial will be in St. Gregory’s Catholic Cemetery will Military Honors provided by American Legion SMN & R #163. Gerald was born on February, 17, 2015 at Seneca, KS, to Paul A. and Rose (Koehler) Wempe. He graduated from St. Peter & Paul Catholic School in Seneca. He helped his father farm after high school and then joined the U.S. Army. After his discharge he returned and continued farming near Seneca. In 1959, he moved to Marysville and purchased the Hutchison Insurance Agency renaming it Wempe Insurance Agency. Gerald grew the business and retired in 1983. On October 5, 1943, he married Elsie Sunderland at San Diego, CA. He enjoyed golf, dancing, singing and playing cards. Gerald liked traveling throughout United States and spending time with friends and family. He was a member of the Moose Club, American Legion, Knights of Columbus and Marysville Country Club. Gerald was a Past Commander of the Legion and a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Elsie on June 8, 2011; and siblings, Marcella Lierz, Cleta Harris, Art Wempe, Betty Haug, Mark Wempe and Paul Richard Wempe. Survivors include his children, Rick (Cecilia) Wempe, Austin, TX, and Connie (Michael) Mertes, Surprise, AZ; two grandchildren, Lance (Kathy) Mertes and Jacob Wempe; three great-grandchildren, Emma, Gracie and Rachel; and siblings, Elsie Steck, Muskegon, WI, Rosemary (Norman) Luebbe, Seneca, Sally Smith, St. Joseph, MO, Mary Jane (Regis) Rochel, Axtell, Claire Louise (Jack) Lackey, Beloit, and Ruth Ann Wanless, White Bear Lake, MN. A memorial fund has been established to St. Gregory's Catholic School. Contributions may be sent in care of Kinsley Mortuary.
