Louis "Bud" C. Wassenberg, 84, of Marysville, passed away Saturday, November 22, 2008, at Community Memorial Healthcare in Marysville. A funeral mass was held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 26, at St. Gregory's Catholic Church in Marysville. Father Anthony Putti officiated. A rosary service was held at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 25, at the church. Laura O'Neil played the organ and Mary Ann Bower led the choir in singing “Day Is Done”, “On Eagles Wings”, “Be Not Afraid”, “This Day was Made by the Lord” and “Amazing Grace”. Pallbearers were Matt Wassenberg, David Wassenberg, Gary Wassenberg, Kurt Staggenborg, Eric Stichternath and Jim Borgerding. Honorary pallbearers were Mathew Altwegg, Bryan Altwegg, Nicholas Ward, Tyler Ward, Ronald Moeller and Jacob Baker. Burial was in the church cemetery. Louis was born February 29, 1924, near Marysville, KS, the son of Ben and Mary (Voet) Wassenberg. He attended St. Gregory's Catholic School and graduated from Marysville High School in 1942. During World War II, from 1944 until 1946, he served in the U.S. Army and Air Force. He was a member of the American Legion Post #163 for over 60 years. On May 24, 1951, he married Lorraine Larson at St. Gregory's Catholic Church. She survives. He lived and farmed south of Marysville and also worked for Peterson Ready Mix and Marysville Ready Mix until retiring and moving into Marysville. He enjoyed woodworking and making projects for his grandchildren, family and friends. Survivors include his wife, Lorraine of the home; one son, Loren Wassenberg and wife Rhonda of Blue Rapids, KS; two daughters, Leann Altwegg and husband Jeff of Riley, KS, and LuAnn Ward and husband Mark of Wamego, KS; three brothers, Wilfrid "Pete" Wassenberg and wife Billie of Marysville, Gene Wassenberg and wife Arlene of Marysville, and Maurice "Fearless" Wassenberg and wife Evelyn of Fort Scott, KS; three sisters, Rosemary Brungardt of Auburn, NE, Dorthea "Pat" Wassenberg of Minneapolis, MN, and Rita VanGaasbeek and husband Roland of Albuquerque, NM; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Bernard and infant brother Gregory; one sister, Elizabeth "Liz"; and one son, Gregory Paul Wassenberg. A memorial fund has been designated to the church. Contributions may be sent in care of Kinsley Mortuary.
