Dean Wesley Nelson, 55, of Marysville, KS, passed away Wednesday, April 1, 2015, surrounded by his family at his home. Visitation was Friday, April 3, 2015 from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. at Kinsley Mortuary in Marysville. A funeral service was held at 10 a.m., Saturday, April 4, at the United Methodist Church in Marysville. Rev. Dale Lewis officiated. The musicians were Janet Fritschi, Bryton Stoll and Nick Stoll. The pallbearers were Shannon Montgomery, Shane Montgomery, Eric McMillan, Josh Blumer, Jess Urban, Rob Pinnick, DeWayne Brewer and Bob Latta. The honorary pallbearers were Randy Roberts, Bob Yager, J.B. Wilson, Ron Stone, Bob Stone, Craig Kane and Neil Peterson. Burial was in the Marysville City Cemetery. Dean was born July 17, 1959 in Marysville, the son of Wesley and Marilyn (Roberts) Nelson. In 1977 he graduated from Marysville High School. On August 9, 1980, he was united in marriage to Maureen O’Keefe at the United Methodist Church in Marysville. They had two children, Megan and Jordy. Dean and Maureen owned Jayhawk Bowl for twenty years before selling in 2005. He traveled to many National Bowling Tournaments and bowled a high game of 299. He was also a conductor and locomotive engineer for Union Pacific Railroad for the past 17 years and was on Maintenance of Way from 1979-1983. Dean had many loves in his life. He enjoyed coaching his daughter’s Marysville Magic Softball team for ten years. He was an avid race fan of his son, Jordy Nelson, who races IMCA Modified at Beatrice Speedway. Dean enjoyed building engines and fine tuning the race car every week with his son. His other love was sports, including K-State Basketball and Kansas City Royals, where he attended the ALCS Championship game last October. Dean had recently began to restore a 1956 Pontiac Safari with Jordy. He also loved traveling to Mackinac Island and taking cruises. Dean had a true love for his animals, Rah, an Egyptian Mau cat, and his dog and walking partner, Motley. He was preceded in death by his father, Wesley. Survivors include his mother, Marilyn; his wife, Maureen; daughter, Megan (Jess) Urban, Marysville; son, Jordy (Nicole) Nelson, Marysville; sister, Brenda (Craig) Kane, Berryton; nine grandchildren, Beau, Micaiah, Briggs, Boston, Wrigley Urban, Brooklynn, MaKenna, Aubree, Madalynn Nelson; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial fund has been established and will be designated later. Contributions may be sent in care of Kinsley Mortuary.
