Raphael A. “Ray” Lierz, 91, Frankfort, died Wednesday, February 17, 2016 at the Frankfort Community Care Home. Visitation was Sunday, February 21 from from Noon until 5 p.m. at Padden Funeral Chapel in Frankfort. Rosary services were held at 3 p.m. at Padden Funeral Chapel and 7 p.m. at Annunciation Catholic Church in Frankfort. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 a.m., Monday, February 22 at Annunciation Catholic Church. Father Jim Shaughnessy officiated. Burial was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Frankfort. Ray was born on April 26, 1924 to Joseph Henry and Mary Anna (Rottinghaus) Lierz at their home in Marshall County, the 6th of 10 children. He attended school at Allison Country School through the eighth grade. On April 4, 1970, he was united in marriage to Velma Margaret (Funk) Mongold at the Annunciation Catholic Church. They lived northwest of Frankfort, not far from where he was born and raised. After a lifetime of farming and raising livestock, they moved into their home in Frankfort in 1985, when his wife was having health problems. Ray retired from farming in 1986. Ray was a lifetime member of Annunciation Catholic Church. He enjoyed traveling with his wife; playing cards in Frankfort or Home City; and telling stories about changes he had seen in his lifetime; he was also well known as a prankster – as he always said, “I just wanted to have fun.” Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Velma in 1999; brothers, Cyril, Alvin, Joe and Henry; sisters, Gertrude Wilmot, Genevieve, and Mary Christy; brother-in-laws, Allen Wilmot, Roy Christy, Kenneth Haverkamp; and sister-in-law, Patricia Lierz; and nephew, Danny Haverkamp. Survivors include his step-sons, Gerry (Deanna) Mongold, Tyrone, OK, Lanny Ray (Mary Esther) Mongold, Corpus Christie, TX, Ronnie (Carla) Mongold, Maple Hill, Richard (Kay) Mongold, Murfreesboro, TN; daughter-in-law and caregiver, Carol Mongold, Topeka; sisters, Anna (Cletus) Haverkamp, Corning, Rosanna (Kenneth) Haverkamp, Goff; eleven grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and twenty-three nieces and nephews. A memorial fund is established to Meadowlark Hospice or the Annunciation Catholic Church. Contributions may be sent in care of Padden Funeral Chapel, Frankfort.
