James Albert (Jim) Mathewson, 46, Axtell, died Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital from a work related accident. Visitation was Friday, May 20, from 1 to 5 p.m. at Axtell-Landreth Funeral Home in Axtell. A rosary service was held at 7 p.m., Friday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Axtell. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 21 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church. Father Albert Hauser officiated. Kathy Buessing played the organ while the church choir sang “On Eagles Wings”, “Here I Am Lord”, “Drummer Boy”, “Canticle of the Sun”, “Come Home”, “City of God”, and “Old Rugged Cross”. The pallbearers were Brian Sears, Matthew Sears, Ryan Mathewson, John Mathewson, Dustin Rottinghaus, and Christopher Rottinghaus. The honorary pallbearers were Cory Brown, Ken Cacek, Bob Wredt, Kent Buessing, Jason Knowles, and Justin Knowles. Burial was in the church cemetery. Jim was born on December 20, 1969 at Pawnee Memorial Hospital, Pawnee City, NE to Raymond and Phyllis Mathewson. He graduated from Axtell High School in 1988. In 1992, he was united in marriage to Jenny Knowles. Jim was employed by Quality Homes of Summerfield. He liked to hunt, be outdoors, and watching and reading westerns. He especially loved being with family and friends. Jim was a member of the Axtell Knights of Columbus. He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond. Survivors include his wife, Jenny; mother, Phyllis; children, Winsten Mathewson, Trisha Mathewson, Wayne Mathewson; brothers, Bob (Lisa) Mathewson, Axtell, Mike (Lisa) Mathewson, Summerfield, Don Mathewson, Summerfield; sisters, Elaine (Ted) Sears, Salina, Jane (Tim) Rottinghaus, Baileyville; and numerous family members and friends.
