Howard L. Martin, 84, of Beattie, KS, died Thursday, June 4, 2009 at his home in Beattie. A funeral service was held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 9 at the Beattie United Methodist Church. Pastor Camile Sutton officiated. Jane Sedlacek played the organ while Kathy Rueger sang “Just a Closer Walk With Thee”, “Amazing Grace” and “Old Rugged Cross”. Pallbearers were Tage Martin, T.J. Martin, Darren Martin, Brian Martin, Charlie Martin and Derrick Martin. Honorary pallbearers were Jim Wapp, Lyle Polson, Gary Bergmann and Don Schiebe. Burial was in the Beattie Union Cemetery. Howard was born July 8, 1924 on a farm near Beattie, the son of Ida and William Martin. He graduated from Beattie High School. In May 1944, he joined the U.S. Army and was a veteran of WWII. He was discharged in 1946. On September 18, 1946 he married Bulah Mae Frye. Howard worked as a mechanic at Etherton's Ford Tractor, worked in the oilfields, operated Holstein dairy farms in Beattie, Hanover, Blue Rapids and Winifred, and did logging and saw milling. He built a flag case for the Beattie American Legion. He was a member of the Beattie American Legion, VFW, Beattie United Methodist Church and the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow up. He is preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Leota; two brothers, Edmond and Leonard Martin; one son, Monte Martin; and one great-grandson, Rikki Crowder. Survivors include his wife, Bulah; four sons, Steve Martin of Plattsmouth, NE, William Martin of Gravity, IA, Theodore Martin of Blue Rapids, KS, and Jim Martin of Derby, KS; one brother, Lawrence Martin of Waterville, KS; fifteen grandchildren and thirty-one great-grandchildren.
