Melvin L. Gustin, 83, Marysville and formerly of Seneca, passed on Sunday, July 24, 2016 at Community Memorial Healthcare in Marysville. A funeral service was held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, July 29, at the Memorial Presbyterian Church in Marysville. Rev. Marilyn Sweet officiated. The eulogy was given by Michael Ulmer. The musicians were Carol O’Neal, Dave Sargent, Ken Gustin, and Pat Breeding. Music included “I Call It Home”, “Go Rest High On That Mountain”, and “The Lord’s Prayer”. Melvin was born March 11, 1933 at Manhattan, KS, to Roy and Mary Gustin. In 1951, he graduated from Centralia High School. In 1953, he was united in marriage to Marlene Stowell. In 1999, Melvin retired from the Todd Tractor Company in Seneca where he had been a salesman for 42 years. He and Marlene also operated a small family farm in Nemaha County. Many know Melvin as a saxophone player, as he led his own dance band at the age of 13, playing for wedding dances and other celebrations throughout NorthEast Kansas for many years. Melvin was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons for over 60 years, and served as Past Master of Seneca Masonic Lodge #39. Of late he was a member of Oketo Lodge #25. He was a veteran of the Korean War Conflict, serving as a radio operator in the U.S. Army while stationed in the Panama Canal Zone, and also was a 59-year member of American Legion Post 163, Marysville. Survivors include his wife, Marlene; sons, Michael (Lisa) Gustin, Marysville, and Ken (Joy) Gustin, Bangor, Maine; grandsons, Derek Gustin, Manhattan, and Tanner Gustin, Marysville; and sisters, Thelma Latta, Marysville, and Kathy Smith, Axtell. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Mary Gustin. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established which will be designated later by the family.
