Dale Willey "Pat" Olmsted, 94, of Beattie, KS, died Monday, September 26, 2016 at his home. Visitation was Wednesday, September 28, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Kinsley Mortuary in Marysville. A rosary service was held at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday evening at St. Malachy's Catholic Church in Beattie. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, September 29 at St. Malachy's. The clergy included Bishop Thomas Olmsted, Bishop Eduardo Nevares, Fr. Nathan Haverland, Fr. Fred Adamson, Fr. David Sanfilippo, and Msgr. Liam Barr. The pallbearers were Tom Olmsted, Rob Olmsted, Jim Olmsted, Patrick Dodd, Michael Dodd, James Sandstrom, Barry Sandstrom, Jay Sandstrom, John Paul Sandstrom, Scott Sandstrom, John Anderson, and Eric Anderson. Burial was in St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery north of Beattie. Pat was born July 2, 1922 near Home, KS, son of Tom Tighe and Fern Crystal (Willey) Olmsted. He attended Pretty Prairie and High Tower country grade schools. From 1935 until graduating in 1939, Pat rode his horse 1,800 miles back and forth to Beattie High School. He enjoyed music and sports. In high school he played baseball, basketball, played the saxophone in the band and sang in the quartet. He continued playing with the Snipe Creek, Beattie, Lone Elm, and Barneston ball teams. On December 27, 1943, he married Margaret Helen Hughes at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church in Marysville. Pat was a farmer. He farmed with horses until 1948 when he was able to purchase a Ford tractor for $500. He came home and told Helen he had to mortgage her in order to borrow the money! He loved living on the farm and going fishing and trapping. He also enjoyed coaching baseball and softball teams. Pat and Helen together enjoyed dancing as often as they could. Pat was preceded in death by his parents; and two grandsons, Jeffrey Dodd and Travis Olmsted. Survivors include his wife, Helen; children, Tim (Rosalie) Olmsted, Beattie, Jerry (Lu) Olmsted, Emporia, KS, Bishop Tom Olmsted, Phoenix, AZ, Mary (Gary) Dodd, Branson, MO, Jane (Jeff) Sandstrom, Marysville, and Monica (Scott) Anderson, Olathe, KS; sister, Norma (John) Robinson, Marysville; 19 grandchildren and 46 great-grandchildren. A memorial fund has been established and will be designated later. Contributions may be sent in care of Kinsley Mortuary.
