Vera A. Landoll

August 16, 1916 — June 14, 2017

Vera Agnes (Wassenberg) Landoll, age 100, of Hanover, KS, died peacefully on Monday, June 14, 2017 at the Hanover Long-Term Care in Hanover surrounded by her children and their spouses. Visitation was Friday, June 16, from 1-5 p.m. at the Hanover Mortuary. A rosary service was held at 7:00 p.m., Friday, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Hanover. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, June 17, at St. John’s Catholic Church. Father Joseph Kieffer and Father Nathan Haverland officiated. The pallbearers and honorary pallbearers were her grandsons, Don Sand, Daryl Sand, Derek Sand, Denis Sand, Phil Landoll, Jed Smith, Jarod Allerheiligen, Todd Landoll, Josh Landoll, Ryan Owen, Brett Landoll, Darren Landoll, Jason Landoll, and Eric Landoll. Burial was in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery. Vera was born near Marysville to Frank and Martha Wassenberg on August 16, 1916, the second of seven children. She graduated from Marysville High School. While going to high school, she roomed with and kept house for Dr. Hearle’s family and later worked at Hested’s 5 & 10 store. On September 25, 1940, she married Raymond Charles Landoll. He preceded her in death on April 12, 1970. They lived for 26 years on the farm that was homesteaded by the Landoll family where Ray was born. Ray then fulfilled a promise made to Vera when they married; “moving into town someday”. He designed and built their house in Hanover in 1966 where Vera lived for 42 years. Vera moved back to Marysville and lived at Country Place Assisted Living for 7 1/2 years. She returned in December to Hanover, the community she loved, where she had spent her married life and raised her children. Vera was a member of St. John’s Altar Society and an HDU neighborhood club. She loved to dance, play pinochle, and later in life Bingo. Along with raising her eight children, she cared for a sister’s baby and small children and helped with a neighbor’s children during times of family crisis. After Ray died, she worked as a cook at two local restaurants—the Matador and Pony Express Truck Stop. She was proud of her family and supported them by babysitting grandchildren, serving as the first Secretary for Landoll Corporation and helping in Owen’s Originals flower shop. She and Ray lived by example: they loved and respected each other and worked hard to support their children and their church. Survivors include two siblings, Martha Meier and Gerald (Dolores) Wassenberg, all of Marysville; seven children, Doris Sand, Hanover; Don (Mary) Landoll, Marysville, Phyllis (Roger) Allerheiligen, Manhattan, daughter-in-law, Gayle Landoll, and Rich (Janeen) Landoll, Marysville, Rosalie (Craig) Smith, Manhattan, Carol (Brad) Owen, Washington, and Doug (Deb) Landoll, Marysville; 30 grandchildren; 57 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; in-laws, Otto & Rose Landoll; four siblings, Margretha Landoll, Laurence Wassenberg, Raphael Wassenberg, and Paul Wassenberg; sisters-in-law, Norma Wassenberg, Marie Wassenberg, Betty Wassenberg, Anna Landoll, Sophia Landoll, Ann Ruhkamp, Lillian Landoll, and Margaret Martin; brothers-in law, William Landoll, Frank Landoll, August Ruhkamp, Sylvester Martin, Vernon Landoll, Monsignor Gilbert Landoll, and Vic Meier; one son, Jim Landoll; one son-in-law, Delmar Sand; one grandson, Patrick Landoll; and two stillborn great grandchildren, Tucker Ray Rutherford and Hailey Grace Cordry.
