Sophia Katherine Niemeier, 88, of Marysville, KS, passed away Saturday, September 19, 2009 at the Dallas Regional Medical Center in Mesquite, TX. A rosary service was held at 7:00 p.m., Friday, September 25 at the St. Gregory's Catholic Church in Marysville. A funeral service was held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, September 26 at St. Gregory's. Father Anthony Putti officiated. Bob Welch played the organ while the church choir sang "How Great Thou Art", "Here I Am Lord" and "Amazing Grace". Pallbearers were Sheldon Edgar, Danny Doyle, J.R. House, Dion Ruhkamp, Logan Barnes and Lynn Wassenberg. Burial was in St. Gregory’s Catholic Cemetery. Sophia was born August 31, 1921 at Hanover, KS, the daughter of Josephine and William Ruhkamp. She married Harold Leland Edgar and they farmed north of Home, KS. In 1978 they retired and moved to Belton, MO. On December 2, 1980, Harold preceded her in death at Belton. Sophia returned to Marysville and later married Eddie Niemeier. Sophia lived in Marysville and surrounding area until last August when she moved to be with both of her children, Barbara in Rudy, AR, and Leland in Seagoville, TX. On Saturday her spirit left her body to heaven above by grace with her son by her side. Sophia lived a long colorful life loving her family, friends and church. She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Harold Edgar; one sister, Mildred Damman; and one brother, Wilfred Ruhkamp. Survivors include her husband, Eddie Niemeier of Marysville; one son, Leland and wife Debby Edgar of Dallas, TX; one daughter, Barbara Doyle and husband Richard of Rudy AR; two sisters, Evelyn Taylor of Marysville, and Mary Ann Lally of Home, KS; five grandchildren, Lory, Debra, Sheldon, Danny and Kathy; seven great-grandchildren, Kaci, Gwen, J.R., Kayla, Josephine, Patrick and Gabriel; as well as many other friends and family. A memorial fund has been established and designated to St. Gregory’s Catholic Church. Contributions may be sent in care of Kinsley Mortuary.
