Elizabeth "Beth" Ann Johannes, 73, of Kansas City, MO, passed away quite suddenly from heart failure on Tuesday, September 22, 2009, at the St. Joseph Medical Center, Kansas City, MO. She had been battling diabetes but rather in reasonably good health. A funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, September 28, at Kinsley Mortuary in Marysville. Father Art Rathbun officiated. Deb Landoll played the organ while Wayne Kruse sang "How Great Thou Art" and "Amazing Grace". Pallbearers were Bob Scott, Loren Johannes, Jim Johannes, David Johannes, Scott Johannes and Jay Fry. Burial was in the Marysville City Cemetery. Beth was born May 10, 1936 in Marysville, daughter of Walter and Hazel (Scott) Johannes. She attended Marysville schools and graduated from Marysville High School in 1954. She then attended the University of Kansas where she received a bachelor's degree in education. Beth received a Fulbright fellowship and continued her education completing a Master's in Languages. She taught Spanish in Marysville High School, Carlsbad, NM and Forest Grove, OR. Beth was an exchange teacher in Madrid, Spain, teaching English. She gave up her years of teaching and began a 20-year career as an Analyst with the CIA. She spent most of that time in Washington, D.C., but had a tour of duty in Buenos Aires, Argentina for two years and in Germany for four years. Beth was an avid traveler and during those tours she had chances to travel in many other countries. After retiring from the CIA, she moved back to Forest Grove, OR, and lived for several years. In 2005 she moved to Kansas City and resided at The Greens at Creekside until her death. Beth was a long-standing member of the Episcopal Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Hazel and Walter Johannes; and a brother-in-law, James Fry. Survivors include one sister, Jeanie Fry of Kansas City, MO; one brother, Richard Johannes and wife Jan Camdenton, MO; nieces and nephews, Jay Fry of Kansas City, MO, Jeanna Roberts of Overland Park, KS, Susan Tomenendal of San Antonio, TX, and Scott Johannes of Marshall Town, IA, and their spouses; and many beloved grand nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions maybe made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Marysville and sent in care of Kinsley Mortuary.
