Gary Stichternath, 75, Marysville, died Monday, October 26, 2009 at Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan, Kansas. A rosary service was held at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, October 29 at St. Gregory's Catholic Church, Marysville. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, October 30 at St. Gregory's. The Reverends Anthony Raju Putti, James Shaughnessy and David Allen, nephew of the deceased, officiated. Lectors for the service were Henry Borgerding and Gary Crownover. Bob Welch played the organ while the church choir sang “Be Not Afraid”, “Prayer of St. Francis”, “On Eagles Wings”, “Song of Farewell” and “On Eagles Wings”. Pallbearers were Roger Cottrell, Mark Dwerlkotte, Rocky Edwards, Jim Wassenberg, Mark Wassenberg and Matt Wassenberg. Honorary pallbearers were Jim Borgerding, Jim Breeding, Benny Bussmann, Clarence Cohorst, Bernard Dwerlkotte, Dennis Kane, Francis Kloeker and Marvin Throm. Burial with military honors was in the church cemetery. Gary Stichternath was born September 17, 1934, at Marysville, the son of George Stichternath and Monica Wassenberg-Stichternath. Gary spent his early childhood on a farm north of Marysville near Lone Elm. The family then moved to a farm south of Marysville where he resided for the remainder of his life. He initially attended school in a one-room schoolhouse north of Marysville and then St. Gregory's Catholic Grade School. He graduated from Marysville High School in 1952. He was drafted into the Army in November 1958. He was honorably discharged from the Army Reserves in October 1964. Gary married Twyla Holle, on September 12, 1964 at St. Gregory's Catholic Church, Marysville. They lived on the farm south of Marysville and raised three children. He thoroughly enjoyed farming. Gary was a member of St. Gregory's Catholic Church and served on the St. Gregory's School Board. He was a member and Past Grand Knight of Council # 1777 of the Knights of Columbus and a member and Past Faithful Navigator of Ponce de Leon Assembly of the 4th Degree of the Knights of Columbus. Gary also served on the USD 364 School Board. Survivors include his wife, Twyla; one son Eric Stichternath, Maysville; one daughter Ginny Yarnell and husband Andrew of Denver, CO; and one sister Josephine Allen of Wheatridge, CO. He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Heidi. A memorial fund has been established and may be sent in care of Kinsley Mortuary.
