Edward “Uncle Ed” Eugene Helmlinger, 80, Hanover, died Friday, Nov. 20, 2009, at his farm. A rosary service was held at 7:00 p.m. at the church on Tuesday, Nov 24. A funeral service was held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 25 at St. John's Catholic Church, Hanover. The Rev. David Metz officiated. Janet Fritschi played the organ while the church choir sang “Here I Am, Lord”, “How Great Thou Art”, “Amazing Grace”, “Jerusalem, My Destiny”, “Song of Farewell” and “Faith of Our Fathers”. The pallbearers were Jody Dalebout, Mark Hagedorn, Graham Foust, David Hynek, Alan Hynek and Lee Hynek. Burial was in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, Hanover. Edward Eugene Helmlinger was born November 2, 1929 on a farm southwest of Hanover to Eugene and Helen Helmlinger. Edward attended school in the Prairie Hill School System of Washington County. A lifelong member of St. John's Catholic Church and a 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1743. He spent many hours in service and volunteer activities for St. John's to include choir and throughout the Days of 49 Celebration at the Knights stand. The Christmas Holiday was very special to Edward. Early in life Ed spent several years on the construction crew which built the tall elevators in north Topeka, Kansas. A farmer and stockman, certified jet airline mechanic and tractor/trailer driver for various businesses in North Central Kansas were the numerous interests of Mr. Helmlinger. Edward was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by two sisters, Eileen Bramlage of Frankfort, Ks and Edna Hynek and husband Duane of Barnes, Ks; and nieces and nephews. A memorial fund has been established and will be designated by the family at a later time. Contributions may be sent in care of the Hanover Mortuary.
