Edna Jorgensen Hughes, 95, formerly of Beattie and Summerfield, passed away Monday, January 4, 2010 at Silver Ridge Assisted Living in Gretna, Nebraska. Visitation will be Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. at Kinsley Mortuary in Marysville and one hour prior to service times at the church. A rosary service will be held at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 12, at St. Malachy's Catholic Church in Beattie. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, January 13, at the church. Father Jim Shaughnessy will officiate. Monica Anderson will play and sing "Here I Am Lord", "Amazing Grace", "On Eagles Wings", "You Are Mine" and "Hosea". The pallbearers will be Frank O'Neil, Kevin O'Neil, Terry O'Neil, Tom Olmsted, Jeff Sandstrom and Brian Studer. The honorary pallbearers will be Helen & Pat Olmsted, Ray & Marilyn O'Neil, Barney & Elaine Schneider, Patricia O'Neil, Lois O'Neil, Mike & Vicki Studer. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery, Beattie. Edna was born June 15, 1914, at Axtell, Kansas, the daughter of George and Lona (Gullion) Jorgensen. In 1933, she graduated from Randolph High School. On September 20, 1935, she married Herbert Hughes in Beattie. They resided in the Beattie community from 1935 until 1981 when they moved to a farm near Summerfield. Herbert passed away in 1999 and Edna continued to live in Summerfield until December, 2006. For a year, she resided at Cambridge Place in Marysville and since December of 2007, she has lived at SilverRidge in Gretna, Nebraska. Edna was active in the Democratic Party throughout her life, serving as a precinct committee woman for many years. She was a member of St. Malachy's Church in Beattie and Holy Family in Summerfield, Ladies Guild, served as a Eucharistic Minister and a CCD teacher. While living in Beattie, she was an officer in the PTA and the Commercial Club. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and two sisters, Eva Potter and Leah Schell. Survivors include two daughters, Judy and Kay; son-in-law, Bob Klein, all of Omaha; three grandchildren; two great-grandsons; sister-in-law and brother-in law, Helen and Pat Olmsted of Beattie; nephew, Arlyn Schell of California; cousin, Mary McAtee of Marysville; and other relatives include the O'Neil, Olmsted, Kirkland, and Sandstrom families. A memorial fund has been established and will be designated at a later date. Contributions may be sent in care of Kinsley Mortuary.
