Leona Stohs

Leona Stohs, 95, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010, at Cambridge Place in Marysville. A funeral service was held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 30, at the Evangelical United Church of Christ in Marysville. Rev. Judy Scott officiated. Debbie Bruna played the organ while the congregation sang “How Great Thou Art”. Pallbearers were Allen Jackson, Glenn Behrens, Bill Behrens, Larry Stohs, Bob Stohs and Rick Bailey. Honorary pallbearers were Mike Jackson, Leonhard Stohs, Jr., Don Stohs, Steve Bailey and Herb Stohs. Burial was in Marysville City Cemetery. Leona was born on May 24, 1914, on a farm northeast of Marysville, the daughter of Herman and Martha (Krause) Behrens. She attended grade school at Lily Creek Country School and graduated from Marysville High School in 1932. She attended Kansas State Teachers College at Emporia for two years of normal training and received a life teaching certificate. Leona taught school in Marshall County from 1934 to 1941 and she taught for 1 year at Hebron, NE. She worked as a substitute postmaster at Herkimer, then becoming the postmaster in May of 1973 and working until October 1992. She was united in marriage to Arthur Stohs. He preceded her in death. She was also preceded by a son, Ronald D. Stohs; and two brothers, Victor and Glenn Behrens. Survivors include one daughter, Jean Tichy and husband Norman of DeWitt, Ne; one granddaughter, Amber Carrillo; and two great-grandchildren, Dalton and Laura. A memorial fund has been established and will be designated by the family at a later time. Contributions may be sent in care of Kinsley Mortuary.
