John K. Reiss, 98, of Marysville, KS, died Monday, February 22, 2010 at Community Memorial Healthcare in Marysville. A rosary service was held at 6 p.m., Monday, March 1, at St. John's Catholic Church in Hanover. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, March 2, at St. Gregory's Catholic Church in Marysville. Father Anthony Putti officiated. Rosemary Forst played the organ while the church choir sang "Be Not Afraid", "Panis Angelicus", "Only a Shadow", "You Are Mine" and "Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee". Trumpeter Fred Nieberding, grandson, played "Amazing Grace". Burial will be in Green Mountain Cemetery, Boulder, CO. John was born July 7, 1911, at Jonesboro, Ill., the son of Rudolph O. and Margaret (Lence) Reiss. On May 18, 1938, he married Ruth Jessop. They were married 59 years, 10 months at the time of her death in 1998. John was with the U.S. Army Engineers from 1944-1946. He then moved to Boulder where he was manager of a Phillips Petroleum plant. He won the Colorado Senior Shuffleboard Championship in 1978 & 1981. In 2002 he moved to Hanover, KS and then to Marysville, KS, in 2009. John was a lifetime member of the Boulder Elks Club and Hanover American Legion. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ruth; son-in-law; grandson; three brothers; and one sister. Survivors include one daughter, Margaret Stoehr and husband Tony of Marysville; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Memorials can be made to St. Gregory's Catholic School and sent in care of Kinsley Mortuary.
