Melvin W. Barker, 82, of Marysville, passed away Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at the Blue Valley Nursing Home in Blue Rapids. A rosary service was held at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 2, at St. Gregory's Catholic Church in Marysville. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 3, at the church. Father Anthony Putti officiated. Burial was in St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Hanover. Melvin was born April 1, 1927, at Beattie, KS, the son of Bill and Rose (Zumbahlen) Barker. He attended schools in Beattie, Home City, Bremen and Hanover. He worked for several area farmers as a farm hand. He also worked at the Pacific Hotel doing janitorial work and washed dishes at many restaurants. Melvin was a member of St. Gregory's Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed volunteering at the Habitat Thrift Store, going to the Helvering Center to eat and visit with friends and loved fishing. In 2006 he moved to the Blue Valley Nursing Home. Memorials can be made to St. Gregory's Catholic Church and sent in care of Kinsley Mortuary.
