LaNea M. Hawkins, 71, of Beattie, passed away after a long illness on Friday, March 26, 2010 at Mercy Regional Health Center in Manhattan. A funeral service was held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 30, at the Beattie United Methodist Church. The Rev. Camille Sutton and Rev. Pheobe Pitney officiated. The musicians were Darlene Porting and Marilyn Rogers. Music included "Wind Beneath My Wings", "Country Bumpkin" and "How Great Thou Art". The pallbearers were Ben Hawkins, Kevin Hawkins, Mark Hawkins, Cody Dannar, Tom Smith, Rick Smith, Kenny Manley and Tom Kirkland. The honorary pallbearers were Stanley Hasenkamp, Chuck Marquardt, Jim Runnebaum, John Runnebaum, Doug O’Neil and Terry O’Neil. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Axtell, KS. LaNea was born November 22, 1938 near Waterville, KS, the daughter of Edmund and Katherine (Wichman) Smith. She attended Harmony Grade School near Axtell and graduated from Axtell High School in 1956. After high school she worked for Capper Publications in Topeka. On July 14, 1957 she married John L. Hawkins at Salem Lutheran Church, Axtell. John and LaNea lived in Maryland while John was in the service. She returned to Kansas to live with her parents while John served in France. In 1963 they moved east of Beattie and were dairy farmers for 35 years. LaNea enjoyed oil painting, quilting, traveling and following her grandsons activities. She was preceded in death by her father; and one son, Gary. Survivors include her husband, John; one son, Dennis Hawkins and wife Rhonda of Beattie; one daughter, Judy Dannar and husband Everette of Overbrook, KS; mother, Katherine Smith, Axtell; one brother, Gerald Smith and wife Kathy of Axtell; and four grandsons, Ben Hawkins, Kevin Hawkins, Mark Hawkins and Cody Dannar. A memorial fund has been established and will be designated at a later date. Contributions may be sent in care of Kinsley Mortuary.
