Sgt. Terry L. Douglas, 44, of Marysville, passed away Monday evening, June 21, 2010 at his home after battling colon cancer since he was diagnosed August 30, 2008. A funeral service was held at 10 a.m., Monday, June 28, at the United Methodist Church in Marysville. Rev. Dale Lewis officiated. The musicians were Deb Landoll, Valerie Oltman, Wayne Kruse and Rev. Dale Lewis. Music included “Wind Beneath My Wings”, "I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing”, "Save a Place for Me", “Smile” and “Hero”. The honorary pallbearers were Todd Ackerman, Jeff Weber, Howard Pendergast, Tim Anderson, Dan Harlan, Bob Thompson, Toby Douglas, Larry Wenzl, Jerry Birdsley, Jimmy Keller, Randy Jones, Todd Packett, David Ohlde, Warren Slupianek and Chad Rhodes. Burial was in the Marysville City Cemetery with several honor guards standing at attention while Marysville Chief of Police Todd Ackerman presented a flag to the family. The Marshall County dispatcher called the "Last Call" and then the bagpiper, Charles Liles, played into the distance. Terry was born August 30, 1965 at Beloit, KS, son of Melvin L. and Virginia B. (Shoemaker) Douglas. After graduating from Cawker City High School in 1983 he was a carpenter until moving to Marysville in 1987. He worked at Thompson Lumber until joining the Marysville Police Department on June 5, 1990. He served the community more than 20 years as the acting police chief from August 1 to October 23, 1995, and then served as chief until February 1997. Terry taught D.A.R.E. at Marysville Elementary School, was the firearms instructor who certified the Marysville department yearly, instructor for the concealed-carry permits and helped with Special Olympics. In 1987 he met Lori Waite at their best friends’ wedding and four months later married they were married on August 9, 1987 at the United Church in Kensington, KS. He was a sports enthusiast who liked to hunt, was a member of the Wildlife Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and North America Hunting Club and a NASCAR fan. His father, Melvin, preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife, Lori; daughter, Taylor; mother, Virginia Douglas, Glen Elder, KS; and brother, Gary Douglas, Mankato, KS. The Taylor Douglas Educational Fund has been established.
