Virgil LeRoy Slifer, 72, of Frankfort, died Thursday, July 8, 2010 at the Frankfort Community Care Home. A funeral service was held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, July 12, at Padden Funeral Chapel. Burial was in Antioch Cemetery southwest of Frankfort. Virgil was born December 17, 1937 at Bigelow, KS, son of George Lawrence and Gladys May Thomas Slifer. He graduated from Frankfort High School in 1953. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army for two years during the Korean War. Virgil worked for the railroad as a lineman, and then moved to California where he worked for Fiberite Inc., an Aerospace company in Los Angeles, for 18 years. He moved back to Frankfort in 1982 and worked for Nemaha County Coop in Vliets and Lillis for 14 years. He was a member of the VFW Post #1359 in Frankfort and the American Legion Post #257 in Vermillion for 27 years. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and was a fan of the Dallas Cowboys. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Joy Sue Otts. Survivors include his daughter, Beverly Slifer of Dallas, TX; four brothers, Harold of Frankfort, Kenneth of Seneca, Don of Scottsdale, AZ, and Verlin of Frankfort; and nieces and nephews. A memorial fund has been established and will be designated at a later date. Contributions may be sent in care of Padden Funeral Chapel.
