Bob Sand, 86, Hanover, died Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at his home.Visitation was from noon until 8 p.m., Friday, April 6 at Hanover Mortuary, Hanover.  The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m.Services were held Saturday, April 7, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Hanover with Pastor Donna Florio and Jill Duis officiating.Pallbearers were Bob's grandsons.  Burial was in Hanover City Cemetery.Bob was born July 22, 1931, in Odell, Neb. to Louis J. and Doris M. (Muth) Sand. He grew up in Odell with four siblings: Bill, Jamie, Jackie, and Dallas. He graduated from Odell High School in 1948 at the age of 16.After high school, he went to railroad school in Omaha and became a depot agent for the Burlington Northern Railroad. He joined the Navy in 1951 and served his country as radio man first class on the USS Brown DD546 and in Inchon, Korea during the Korean War.After his honorable discharge in 1954, he returned to Nebraska and resumed working for Burlington Northern. He was a depot agent in Diller, Morrowville, Guide Rock, and Red Cloud. While he was working in Diller, he married Dora Ann Bergmeier on January 3, 1958 at Beatrice, Neb., and they had six children.Bob was a third-generation newspaper editor and publisher. His grandpa and grandma Muth owned the Mahaska Leader, and Bob’s mother bought the Odell Oracle after Louis died when Bob was 6; he grew up working in the news office with his mother and siblings. His older brother, Bill, eventually bought his own paper, The Friend Sentinel, and in 1967, Bob and Dorie bought The Hanover News.The newspaper was his life, and he never missed a week.  He put his last paper to bed Tuesday night and died early Wednesday morning.  Bob and Dorie celebrated 50 years at the paper on September 8, 2017.Bob loved Suduko puzzles, trains, Fox news, crossword puzzles, playing cards, Gunsmoke, Family Feud, polka music, and most of all, his family.Survivors include his wife Dorie of 60 years, son Roy of Mandeville, La., daughters Marla (AJ) Tegtmeier of Hanover, Kyla (David) Jensby of Crete, Neb., Vonda (Jeff) Hynek of Bremen, Brenda (Tim) Breth of Oberlin, and Janna (Aaron) Stegmaier of Hutchinson.They had 15 grandchildren: Aubrie (Ben) Schaefer, Ben Tegtmeier, Mitchell (Erin) Tegtmeier, Collin (Rachel) Tegtmeier, Haley (Tim) Odvody, Matt Jensby, Cassie (Tim) Heinen, Trista (Jeremy Peck) Hynek, Jayda (Garett) Edgar, Lydia Hynek, Kyle, Kelden, and Kole Breth, Alyssa Stegmaier, and Audrie (Greg) Canales.They also had 13 great grandchildren: Laney, Tristen, and Ashton Schaefer; Kennedy Tegtmeier; Talon, Will, and Boston Tegtmeier; Robert Tegtmeier; Jackson Odvody; Skyler and Stratton Heinen; and Grayson and Madix Edgar.Bob is also survived by his sister Jackie Jones of Gretna, Neb., his brother Dallas Shafer of Holyoke, Col., several nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of other relatives and friends.He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis Sand and Doris Sand-Shafer and his stepfather Dale Shafer, his sister Jamie Pangburn, and his brother Bill Sand.A memorial fund is established and will be designated later.
